The past few years have witnessed a tremendous increase on the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in a wide range of civilian and commercial applications. With the number of UAVs expected to increase explosively in the coming years, it is imperative to develop innovative communication technologies not only for supporting reliable and secure UAV remote command and control, but also for enabling high-capacity mission-related information transmission, with potentially densely deployed UAVs. To this end, integrating UAVs into 5G cellular systems is a promising solution, where UAVs with various missions are connected to cellular networks as special aerial users. Thanks to the almost ubiquitous accessibility and high authentication of today's Long-Term Evolution (LTE) and the forthcoming 5G networks, cellular-connected UAV communications are expected to achieve orders-of-magnitude performance improvement over the traditional direct ground-to-UAV communications, in terms of reliability, security, throughput, and operation range. Moreover, the integration of UAVs can also be exploited to improve the communication performance of terrestrial users in 5G, where UAVs such as drones, helikites, and balloons, could be deployed as dedicated aerial flying base stations (BSs), access points (APs), or relays to assist the terrestrial communications. UAV-assisted 5G communications have many promising advantages with numerous potential use cases including public safety, BS offloading, information dissemination and data collection for Internet of Things (IoT), fast service recovery after natural disasters.

The two paradigms of cellular-connected UAV communications and UAV-assisted 5G communications are significantly different from the conventional terrestrial communications, due to the high altitude and mobility of UAVs, the unique channel characteristics of the UAV-ground links, the stringent design constraints imposed by the size, weight, and power (SWAP) limitations of UAVs, as well as the additional design degrees of freedom with joint UAV mobility control and communication resource allocation. This workshop aims to bring together researchers, industry practitioners, and individuals working on the related areas to share their new ideas, latest findings, and state-of-the-art results. Prospective authors are invited to submit original manuscripts on topics including, but not limited to:
