Keynote 1: Mahesh Sooriyabandara (Toshiba Research Europe Ltd., U.K.)

Title: Industrial Wireless: Evolution or Revolution?

Abstract: The transition towards industrial networking is undoubtedly the most notable development in the industrial communication sector. State-of-the-art industrial networks are a mix of fieldbus systems, industrial Ethernet and some wireless technologies. The emerging industry 4.0 initiative is aimed at enhancing the flexibility, resource efficiency, versatility, and productivity of legacy industrial systems. Essential to Industry 4.0 is the implementation of a robust, powerful, and ubiquitous connectivity layer capable of dealing with diverse and challenging requirements. Current trends suggest that next generation industrial systems will be characterized by increased penetration of robotics hardware and automation systems and integration of virtualization technologies. This talk, which would be centred around legacy and emerging industrial applications and the landscape of industrial connectivity technologies, would discuss whether the emerging Tactile Internet is an evolution of the previous three generations of industrial networks or it provides an opportunity to revolutionize industrial systems. 

Biography
Mahesh Sooriyabandara is Associate Managing Director at the Telecommunications Research Laboratory, Toshiba Research Europe Ltd., based in Bristol, UK and an Honorary Visiting Professor at School of Engineering at Cardiff University. At Toshiba Research Europe Ltd., he leads a cross-disciplinary research project portfolio on networked systems in energy, semi-conductor, digital, robotics, and energy domains. He is a recognised expert in a number of specialist technical areas including wireless networks, smart grid and Internet-of-Things and currently advising a number of large national projects in energy and robotics sectors. He also served as keynote speaker, panelist and chair at various conferences and forums (including IEEE organised events Globecom, Dyspan, VTC, 5G Summit). Mahesh received his B.Sc in Electronic and Electrical Engineering from University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka and Ph.D in Engineering from University of Aberdeen, U.K., in 1998 and 2004 respectively. He has co-authored over ninety peer-reviewed research publications, standards documents, several book chapters and is a named inventor of over twenty patent applications at various stages of grant. Mahesh has won several awards including Toshiba Corporation's corporate technology prize in 2013 in recognition of business impact in industrial wireless mesh networking area. He was involved in the standardisation activities within IETF, IEEE and ETSI for years. Mahesh is a Fellow of the IET and a senior member of ACM and IEEE.

Keynote 2: Rakash SivaSiva Ganesan (Nokia Bell Labs, Germany)

Title: Transparent Integration of 3GPP and Time Sensitive Networks

Abstract: Time Sensitive Networking (TSN) is gaining importance for industrial deployments and is currently standardized. TSN is a set of IEEE 802.1Q protocols that enables deterministic communication between devices such as sensors, actuators, or controllers with possibly stringent latency requirements. These devices are typically connected to wire-line networks and TSN is developed keeping the wire-line industrial network in mind. Introduction of wireless devices offers flexibility, scalability, and low-cost maintenance. In this talk, some of the key components of TSN enabling deterministic communication and very low latency are introduced.  Further, the talk presents a mechanism to integrate wireless communication systems, e.g., 5G system, into a TSN deployment. For this purpose, the talk focuses on the centralized architecture model of IEEE 802.1Qcc and shows how wireless sensors can be transparently connected to the TSN network with help of a 5G mobile network.

Biography
Rakash SivaSiva Ganesan is a Senior Research Engineer in Nokia Bell Labs, Germany. His research interests include massive MIMO systems, wireless communication in industrial networks and digital signal processing. He is taking part in the TACNET 4.0 project where his focus is on developing mechanisms to seamlessly integrate 5G systems and industrial communication networks. Before joining Nokia Bell Labs, Rakash pursued his Ph.D. in Technical University Darmstadt.
